The road we take is very scenic and it passes through a number of small towns such as Kalaat M’Gouna, Boumalne, and Tinghir. Todra Gorge is stunning with its massive canyons of about 1,300 feet (400 m) deep. We will walk around in the valley and visit major oases found alongside it. You will have fun hiking the Todra River gorge as well as taking in the magnificent scenery all around.
After Todra Gorge, we travel to the oasis town of Erfoud, which is popular for the rich fossil deposits found in the area. We will stop for lunch at a local restaurant before going to a craft workshop to see how exactly the fossils get extracted from bedrock.
Later on in the afternoon, we will drive towards Merzouga. There, you are in for one of the best desert camel rides in Morocco, about an-hour-and-thirty-minute ride to Berber camp. You will be climbing Erg Chebbi's giant sand dunes on the way to the camp. This forest has become known for its friendly Barbary macaque monkeys. So, we will stop longer at Azrou for you to enjoy picking forest fruits and berries and play with the amiable animals.
From here we will take a spectacular drive to the extraordinary city of Ifrane. It is also referred to as the Moroccan Switzerland because of its clean environment. The current city of was established in 1928 by the French, although the first permanent settlement of the area dates to the 16th century. That first community was 4 miles (7 km) from present Ifrane, and was made up of cave dwellings. Only in the last decades have people built houses above ground. So, Ifrane is a contemporary city, which looks like belonging more to a European continent than Africa. You will feel the striking contrast in architecture right away.
